TOP CHEAP HOME RENOVATIONS

House values may have taken a dive, but homeowners are still shelling out dough for home remodeling, according to the National Association of Home Builders. The group says the most common projects are in the higher price range – major home additions and alterations worth more than $25,000, such as replacing siding or adding a new deck. These are the projects that add real value to your home, and consequently, more value for resale.

Improve Your Home On The Cheap

Of course, most people don’t have $25k to spend on a home project, or anything else for that matter, but if you only have $1,000, there are ways to upgrade your pad and get bang for your buck. Below is a list of items you should invest in to see the best returns.

Gift Cards For Cash

If you have unwanted gift cards, and you’re trying to make some extra cash after Christmas, there are a couple of options for trading them in for money.

There are websites out there that will give you a percentage of your gift card value, either in cash, or through an Amazon.com gift card. Usually you need to have at least $25 on your card, and the trade in value can range from 60 to 85 percent of the value, depending on the merchant.

Alternatively, the same sites sell gift cards to most major stores that other people have traded in, with discounts that can save you from 5 to 20%.

If you are like me, and have extra gift cards left over from exchanges or otherwise, getting paid to get rid of them before they expire might be worth looking into. But be sure you don’t plan to use them, as the fraction of the value you’re given may not be worth it.

Two sites to check out are www.plasticjungle.com and www.giftcardrescue.com.

Botax

A lot of cosmetic surgery enthusiasts would be frowning right now, if their face lifts and Botox allowed it. A proposed part of the new health care bill includes a 5 percent tax on elective cosmetic surgery like tummy tucks, face lifts, hair plugs, collagen injections, and any other nonrequired procedures—a proposal known as the “Botax.” The tariff is expected to raise an estimated $6 billion.

Not only are many plastic surgery patients unhappy, but so are their surgeons. Associations including the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and the American Society of Plastic Surgeons have launched campaigns against the tax, arguing it would hurt their business during a recession, especially since elective surgeries are down already. Industry groups also say the tax won’t target the high rollers Congress is aiming for since one-third of their patients make less than $30,000 a year, 70 percent make less than $60,000, 86 percent make less than $90,000 and only 13 percent make more than $90,000. In addition, an estimated 85 percent of operations are paid for using credit.

Some who are against the tax cite research showing that cosmetic surgery could actually stimulate the economy, by making Americans look better – thus more marketable and productive – through increased attractiveness, self esteem, confidence, and persuasiveness. In fact, a 2005 study by the Federal Reserve of St. Louis found that good-looking people make about 5 percent more money than their average-looking counterparts, who in turn make 9 percent more than people with below-average looks.

Home Buying Tax Credit Extension

As many of you may know, the First Time Homebuyer Tax Credit has been extended through April and expanded to include current homeowners.

For those who need to move, or have been in the market for a house, it’s a good time to buy – low interest rates, the government tax incentive, and lower home prices compared to recent years. (See my post on Luxury Real Estate For A Steal)

If you are planning to purchase, I thought it would be helpful to break down the eligibility and details for first-time home buyers and current homeowners.

Black Friday Deals

Black Friday deals are being “leaked” in advance of the popular shopping frenzy-day, and one has to wonder if these “leaks” are truly that, or if some savvy marketing manager is getting the word out early. In any event, we’re glad to have the info beforehand, in order to make an educated plan of attack on where to go, and what to buy.

OfficeMax had some of its deals leaked even before Halloween. And while an office supply store may not have been part of your go-to shopping plan, there are some interesting bargains that could make very nice presents.

The best deals reportedly include an Acer Aspire netbook with Intel Atom processor, 10-inch screen and Windows XP for $149, half off its regular price of $300. There is also an Olympus X905 10 MP digital camera for $49. The same camera normally retails for $149.

For those of you who like to wear blankets as robes, Snuggies will allegedly sell for $4.99, a big discount off the $14.99 price “As Seen on TV”. (Snuggies have recently been hilariously parodied as “Slankets” on Real Time With Bill Maher. Now the Snuggie has competition from the Nuddle! But I digress… )

Snuggie For Sale

Some of the go-to sites for leaked ads include www.gottadeal.com, www.slickdeals.com, and www.dealtaker.com.

Offers from Walmart, Best Buy, and Target are also getting a lot of attention, and retailers seem to be stealing a page from each other’s playbooks, matching prices.

According to sources, high-tech items will be deeply discounted, including a 50-inch Sanyo 720p plasma TV for $598, a Magnavox Blu-ray player for $78, and a GPS from TomTom for $59. HDTVs, laptops, and Blu-ray players are also going for fractions of the cost.

At Target, you can get a 32-inch LCD HDTV from Westinghouse for $246, and toasters and coffeemakers for just $3. Best Buy will reportedly offer shoppers a 50-inch Samsung plasma TV for $898, “huge discounts” on GPS units, and a PlayStation 3 Slim with two games for $300.

And Wal-Mart announced recently that it would be bringing back its $10 toys section expanding the assortment this year to more than 100 items.

Store officials aren’t confirming some of the deals you’ll find around the web, and there’ve been reports of photoshoped ads to make them appear real, so it’s best to take the information out there with a grain of salt. Still, most of the preview pricing floating around the net is legit, thanks to “leaks” by the retailers themselves.

Merchants’ losses are your gain, so shop wisely. Despite the early deal launches and rock-bottom rates, analysts are predicting flat sales for retailers this holiday season.

Michelle Obama is Fabuless

The First Lady is certainly a trendsetting, fabuless dresser. She is mostly a winner in the wardrobe department, and the majority of her styles are fabulessly priced.

Here we see her Sartorial Excellence wearing JCrew – one of her clear favorites (she sure loves their cardigans!):

Most recently Mrs. Obama was photographed walking the red carpet in this $199 dress from Talbot’s:

Women across the country seek to emulate Mrs. Obama’s elegant, unique style, and they can afford to do so thanks to her budget-conscious tastes. She is also a supporter of new designers, Chicago designers, and international labels.

Some of the brands the First Lady patronizes include White House Black Market, Moschino, and Jason Wu. And of course, JCrew – a store which has to have seen a huge boost to its bottom line thanks to Mrs. Obama!

Protection From Overdraft “Protection”

Starting July 1st, banks will need customer consent to offer the “overdraft protection” that can cause a damaging domino affect on your bank account. You may be familiar with the exorbitant overdraft fees on ATM and debit card transactions that banks charge when you are trying to buy something that may go over the limit on your account.

It’s been a common practice – slapping customers with a $35- $40 fee for overdrawing their accounts, even by $1. And maybe a check was deposited the same day, but the bank processes your overdraft first!

To stop this usurious practice, new Federal Reserve rules require banks to notify customers of their overdraft services and give customers the option of being covered. Unless a consumer opts in, their transactions will be denied if they overdraw their accounts.

The Associated Press reports that banks earn as much as $25 billion to $38 billion annually from overdraft fees, including check overdrafts.

Overdrafts fees for checks and electronic payments are not prohibited by the new rules.

Trust Fund Baby

What if, with the government’s help, every baby could start out life with a trust fund, no matter what the family’s financial circumstances? While some would certainly call this a great idea, detractors call it one more step toward socialism.

Ski Junkie Alert

If you are a ski junkie, unlike most people, you have probably been looking forward to winter, and major snowstorms.

Some even follow the weather in popular ski destinations like Colorado, where a winter storm warning is currently in effect. The National Weather Service is forecasting snowfall accumulations from 18-36 inches with up to 4 feet possible in parts of Colorado.

This could be a good time to buy that season ski pass, if you plan on multiple trips to mountain resorts. The Epic Pass offers unlimited access to Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, Keystone, Heavenly (Lake Tahoe) and Arapahoe Basin, without any blackout dates.

The Epic Pass is on sale at www.epicpass.com through November 22 for $599.

Similarly, the Colorado Pass offers unlimited, unrestricted skiing at Breckenridge, Keystone, and Arapahoe Basin with an additional 10 days at Vail and Beaver Creek (some restricted dates apply). The price on the Colorado Pass has gone up $10 this season, to $459 for adults and $219 for children.

Season passes offer a pretty good deal when you consider the price of a one-day lift ticket is usually around $60. But it only make sense if you are addicted to powder – and of course, we’re talking about the ski resort kind!
